disabilities network
The University has a long and recognised history of implementing disability equality and working to embed equality and diversity through our activities. The Staff with Disabilities Network welcomes new members from across the University who have a disability, recognising the diverse spectrum that this encompasses. We aim to support disabled staff by providing a forum for discussion, debate and individual development, focusing specifically on providing a unified voice for people who identify as disabled.
We recognise that some aspects of the networks may be more important than others to our members depending on their disabilities and that this may evolve over time. Our aims include:
  • To support the development of a positive culture for staff with disabilities at the University of Plymouth.
  • To act as an information/welcome point for all colleagues with disabilities.
  • To provide an opportunity for staff with disabilities to network both inside and outside the University and to offer possibilities for social and professional peer support and mentoring for all staff.
  • To advise and give feedback on University policy development and associated practice.

UK Disability History Month 2023, ‘Disability, Children and Youth’

UK Disability History Month (UKDHM) is an annual event which aims to promote disabled people’s rights and their struggle for equality now and in the past.
This year UKDHM will take place from 16 November until 16 December 2023.
Every year, UKDHM focuses on a theme, this year the theme is Disability, Children and Youth.
UKDHM comes from a Social Model/Human Rights approach, so that all children and young people with long term impairment will not experience the social exclusion of stigma, stereotypes, negative attitudes and socially created barriers in the environment and the way things are organised.
