About Dawn
Dawn Swancutt is a Senior Research Fellow with a longstanding dedication to health services research that centres on improving patients’ experiences of care. Her career spans more than twenty years, beginning at the University of Birmingham and continuing since 2014 within the Ìýat the University of Plymouth University.
Over this time, Dawn has built enduring partnerships with multi-disciplinary teams, NHS service providers, and patients, working together to design and deliver research that is both practical and meaningful. She is currently co-applicant and programme manager for the NIHR fundedÌýÌýresearch programme, 'Improving group treatment for people with severe obesity', which reflects her approach to tackling complex health challenges through inclusive and applied research.
As Principal Investigator of the study (2025–2027), Dawn leads the development, implementation, and evaluation of a complex health intervention that supports behavioural change within the context of emerging pharmacological treatments. The study draws on expertise from across disciplines to explore innovative ways to offer care for people living with severe obesity, with findings expected in 2027.
Her recent projects include evaluations of GP learning techniques for multimorbidity consultations, patient perspectives on , and service pathways aimed at preventing unnecessary . Each study is shaped by close engagement with stakeholders and a commitment to producing research that informs and enhances NHS service delivery.
Beyond her research, Dawn contributes to the wider academic community as a member of the Evidence Based MedicineÌý, the Research Staff representative on the Researcher Forum and the University Research Excellence Framework steering group.
