About Vasileios
Dr Vasileios Lepesis is a physiotherapy researcher specialising in the role of foot and ankle impairments in people with diabetes, with particular expertise in diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and the biomechanical risk factors contributing to diabetic foot ulceration. His work integrates clinical physiotherapy interventions (manual therapy and exercise) with advanced biomechanical outcome measurement (plantar pressure, joint range of motion, gait analysis) and qualitative research exploring patient experiences.
Key Expertise
- Diabetic foot ulceration and DPN: understanding how reduced joint mobility and altered gait mechanics increase plantar pressure and ulcer risk.
- Physiotherapy interventions: development and evaluation of ankle/foot mobilisation and stretching programmes for people with diabetes.
- Biomechanics and gait analysis: measurement of plantar pressure, ankle and 1st MTP joint range of motion, balance, and gait adaptation.
- Mixed-methods research: proof-of-concept RCTs, qualitative studies on patient acceptability and adherence, and systematic review/meta-analysis.
- Trial design & governance: experience in clinical trial registration and delivery of complex interventions.
Research Impact
Dr Lepesis’ research provides evidence that physiotherapy can play a preventive role in diabetes-related complications by targeting modifiable impairments in foot and ankle function. His work has been supported by competitive funding (e.g., CSP Charitable Trust) and informs both clinical practice and future large-scale clinical trials aimed at reducing the risk of diabetic foot ulceration.
