Your guide to making a Clearing call at the University of Plymouth

Calling us during Clearing, especially on results day, can feel a bit daunting – but we’re here to make it simple, supportive and positive.
Our friendly advisors are ready to take your call from early July until late October, with extended hours on and around results day. The sooner you call, the better your course options.

1. How to prepare for a Clearing call

When you get through to our friendly advisors in the Clearing team, here’s what to expect:
  • We’ll talk with you about your results
  • Collect some personal details
  • Check which courses still have places available
  • Offer you a verbal place if you meet our entry criteria
  • After your offer, we’ll ask if you’d like to speak to our accommodation team
Our goal? To help you find the perfect course here at Plymouth with support every step of the way.

2. Before calling us

Getting ready before you call makes everything smoother. Have these ready:
  • Your UCAS ID and Clearing number
  • Your GCSEs, A levels, BTECs, or other qualifications (make sure you know full course titles, especially for BTECs, as this can affect points)
  • Your personal statement
  • Something to take notes with
Explore our course pages too – knowing the modules, placements and career routes helps you make confident choices. Also, check out life at Plymouth and accommodation options so you can ask questions.

3. Top tips for a smooth call

4. Your call checklist

Questions you might want to ask when you call us:
  • These are my achieved grades – could you talk me through my options?
  • Am I able to switch courses?
  • What accommodation options are available?
  • What is the accommodation application process for Clearing students?
  • What is it like to live and study in Plymouth?

5. After your call

Once you accept your verbal offer:
  • Add the University of Plymouth as your Clearing choice on UCAS Hub (only one choice allowed)
  • Watch out for a confirmation email from us
  • Chat with our accommodation team to arrange your student housing
  • Sort out your student finance as soon as you can
If you need a moment to think, that’s completely fine – just keep in mind that popular courses can fill up quickly.

Hear from our Student Ambassadors

Our call centre staff share their advice for students about to apply through Clearing and some of the reasons they enjoy their role.

My advice would be to keep your options open. Ensure you find some time to do some research and find what options are out there for you! When Clearing opens, we will be waiting to discuss your options with you.

Have all your grades to hand. Stay positive. Ask us anything, even if it’s about our own personal experiences and recommendations. Think about what you enjoy at home, and ask if we know if it can be done here in Plymouth. It more than likely can... There is so much to do here in Plymouth. Especially within the clubs and societies, there are things I’d never even considered or heard of!

I love interacting with people, helping students achieve their university dream and most importantly, sharing my experiences and love for all that is Plymouth and the University.

I have been a Clearing Ambassador for four years and I really enjoy it every year. I like being able to help people achieve their goals of studying a certain subject. Being a small part of their journey into university is a very rewarding experience. I also know how frantic the whole experience can be, having been through it myself, so I like to be able to reassure prospective students that we are here to help as much as possible.
