Things to consider before starting your application

  • Check the application deadline for your course – it’s generally a good idea to have applied six months in advance.
  • Write out your personal statement and ask a friend or family member to proofread it. Have the final version ready before starting your application.
  • Have your qualifications, relevant certificates, and personal statement to hand to upload.
  • Following your application, you may be asked to provide two references or take part in an interview.
  • If you need some more information, you can get in touch with an admissions tutor for an informal chat.
  • Consider how you will finance your studies and make an application for funding. If you studied with us before you could be eligible for a 20% discount on your fees. You can also find out about the postgraduate scholarships available to you as an international student.

Personal statement tips

Consider including:
  • Your preparation – how undergraduate study has prepared you for the course and the topics which are of most interest to you.
  • Your skills – demonstrate that you have the knowledge required to be successful in your studies. Summarise your abilities including organisation, literacy/numeracy/IT skills and time management, including any relevant additional qualifications.
  • Your reasons – why you have applied for the specific programme and why you are deserving of a place. Show how your goals align with the University and that you’re ready for the demand of postgraduate study by illustrating your passion and knowledge.
  • Your goals – explain your aspirations and how you would go about achieving them through postgraduate study.

Application top tips

  • Give yourself time – start early and don’t rush your application; also make sure to check the selection criteria for the course.
  • Draft your personal statement – use Word so you can correct any spelling or grammatical errors, and then have a friend or family member proofread for you.
    • Don’t copy and paste – it can be obvious for admissions tutors when someone has used a ‘catch-all’ statement, submitted a generic document or used online templates.
    • Don’t be negative or exaggerate – you want to show yourself in the best light but also not get caught out.
    • Try not to waffle or use clichéd phrases – your statement should be concise and well-written.
  • Plan out some questions – if you have an application interview, for example to make sure you understand the modules of your course.
  • Remain calm – get in touch if you need assistance.

What happens after you apply?

You will normally receive a decision on your application within four weeks of us receiving your application. 
After you have received your offer you must accept your offer by emailing the Admissions and Enquiries Team at applications@plymouth.ac.uk, within two weeks of the date of your offer letter. If you have applied through UCAS / UCAS Teacher Training, you will be advised by them on how and when you will need to respond to this offer.
